Tanneguy de Bellescize: the human at the heart of white-collar crime

For this episode of Le Cheat Code, we welcomed Tanneguy de Bellescize, lawyer at the Paris bar and partner at Belot Bellescize Mehiri Avocat. A criminal lawyer with real appetite for the work, he looks back on his path, his relationship to the job and the place the new tools now hold in his practice.

From literature to white-collar crime

Tanneguy is a criminal lawyer at the Paris bar. Since 2018 he has devoted himself to white-collar crime, alongside his partners. His taste for literature first led him to law, then his course at Paris 1 introduced him to white-collar crime, a field where every case is, in his words, a genuine human adventure.

Through complex matters, he built the rigour and the standards that shape his work today. Starting his own firm was a long-held dream, one he made real with Daphné. Together they pooled their skills to offer a service worthy of their clients.

AI in practice: a tool, not a replacement

Tanneguy makes no secret of using artificial intelligence day to day. He leans on tools like Claude and LexisNexis to save precious time on legal research and to work through volumes of data that were once out of reach.

But his position is clear: AI does not replace the human. It helps lay solid foundations, move faster, but strategy and decision stay in the lawyer's hands. He also raises the challenge this poses for young lawyers, who have to learn to bring these tools in without losing the human element the job rests on.

"Put yourself into every one of your cases"

Asked what advice he would give the young associate he once was, his answer is sharp: put yourself into every case, even the smallest. For him, behind every matter sits a human story, sometimes a glimmer of hope in the darkest situations.

He recounts defending a woman who, despite her difficulties, showed remarkable strength. By building a dialogue founded on trust, he helped her reconnect with society. Those are the moments that remind him why he chose this path. His advice comes down to a few words: stay curious, commit fully, and treat every case as its own.
