Corporate and M&A weigh close to 0.9 million searches a year

Searches tied to company law and to mergers and acquisitions represent a substantial volume on the online legal market. Across all queries, more than 73,000 monthly searches go through Google: LBOs, joint ventures, due diligence, capital increases, business sales, dissolution, and also the generic trade term "company law lawyer".

This article sums up the key findings of a benchmark on the pivot queries of the corporate and M&A market, in Paris and in the regions.

Three findings that change how you think about SEO

Low volumes, but positions that are easy to take

Corporate and M&A are referral markets. The client usually decides through their network, not through a Google query. Online demand there is lower and more informational than in employment law: close to 85% of the top queries are informational or navigational intent, not commercial. People come to understand first.

On paper, then, the ground looks unpromising. Yet a close analysis of the Google results shows the opposite. The low volumes hide positions that are easy to take, because SEO difficulty there is often low. "Capital reduction" tops out at KD 9, "warranties and indemnities" at KD 12, "holding structure" at KD 13. And even the most strategic commercial query, "company law lawyer Paris", shows only a KD 16, rare for a geolocated trade generic.

The market is therefore less occupied editorially than it appears. A firm investing today with method can take defensible positions within 6 to 12 months, provided it knows where to concentrate its effort.

Corporate and M&A are two distinct markets

The keyword you choose implicitly reveals your target. Generic corporate, "company law lawyer" and its satellite operations (capital, dissolution, business sales), speaks to the SME director looking for advice on their structure. That is the workable heart of the market: volume, clear commercial intent, beatable difficulty.

M&A plays in another league. "Corporate M&A lawyer" brings up August Debouzy, Gide, Herald: top-tier business firms handling mid to large cap deals. The ground is close to unreachable for an independent firm, and the commercial volumes are too low to scale.

Choose your side before producing content. An SME firm should not wear itself out on "M&A lawyer", too premium and too contested by the big names. A premium business firm will get nothing from "company formation", a consumer query with an explosive cost per click.

SEO alone is not enough to exist

Several firms rank on the first page without solid SEO metrics. JDB Avocats ranks first on "company law lawyer" with a simple internal page and low domain authority. Conversely, on "company law lawyer Paris", it is Fidal (AS 76) and DS Avocats (AS 56) that make the difference on domain authority alone.

Two models coexist. The niche SEO machine, embodied by Novlaw (pages per district, a dense blog) or Facchini (a dedicated page optimised on business sales), reproducible by an independent. And the institutional brand, August Debouzy or Gide, where search comes after reputation, the Legal 500 or Chambers rankings and the network.

SEO is therefore not played out on your website alone. A lasting visibility strategy combines search, brand signal and an omnichannel presence.

The method: three complementary types of content

An acquisition set-up that works in corporate combines three levers.

Service pages first, for conversion. A short format, 800 to 1,500 words, centred on the offer, one page per targeted commercial query: company law lawyer Paris, corporate lawyer, M&A lawyer.

Satellite articles next, for the long tail. A medium format, 1,500 to 2,500 words, answering one precise question and linking through to the service page: capital reduction, due diligence, warranties and indemnities, voluntary dissolution.

Lead magnet guides last, to turn informational traffic into a qualified contact. A 20 to 30 page document to download in exchange for a form: the complete guide to selling a business, a company formation kit, a due diligence checklist. One registration equals one contact to follow up.

And paid search, if needed. Not for everyone, but useful on the trade generic ("company law lawyer", cost per click 2.22€, strong commercial intent) when the national difficulty slows SEO down.

Where to start

Before producing a single article, two preliminary steps condition everything else.

Selecting your keywords. No more than five pivot queries. Identify the ones that match your target (SME corporate or premium M&A), your actual offer and your capacity to produce quality content over time. "Company law lawyer" and its Paris version anchor the conversion, the operations feed the satellites.

The case of the regions

The geolocated market outside Paris is low in volume but barely contested. Across the ten largest cities, the total barely reaches 1,500 monthly searches, corporate and M&A combined. Regional M&A hardly exists. The only real ground is local generic corporate, "company law lawyer [city]", where difficulty is two to three times lower than in Paris.

The corporate and M&A market is a referral market, where Google demand stays low and largely informational. But that apparent quiet is an opportunity: SEO difficulty there is low, several commercial queries are still barely worked, and a methodical firm can take defensible positions where the big names rest on their reputation.
